An application to register a domain name must be made to a domain name registrar, of which there are quite a number in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation Limited maintains a list of all domain name registrars in Hong Kong.

The availability of a domain name can be searched through one of these domain name registrars.

An applicant for a domain name must accompany the application with evidence of entitlement to that name, such as a copy of its Business Registration Certificate.

In choosing a domain name, it is desirable to search 1) company names through the Cyber Search Centre or Company Search Mobile Service of the Companies Registry of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, 2) trademarks that are already registered at the Trade Marks Registry, Intellectual Property Department, the Government of the Hong Kong SAR and 3) other domain names to ensure that the domain name that you select is available, and will not be the same as or likely to be confused with another person’s business name, company name, registered trademark, or domain name.

This is particularly important if you intend to implement a branding strategy where your domain name will be the same as or an abbreviation of your business name, company name, or trade mark.
